Trip Planning
A good trip plan allows plenty of flexibility to cope with changing weather and sea conditions as well as the
abilities of your group members, so try not have a too rigid time schedule. Allow time for unforeseen things to
happen!
Starting from the northern end of the Park and paddling south allows you to enjoy the predominant summer and autumn,
northerly, sea breeze coming from behind you. Many times customers have given us the feedback that they were so
glad to have been paddling from the Golden Bay end towards Marahau (at the southern end of the Park) as they cruised
with the predominant northerly winds - so much easier than fighting against it.
One way rentals are possible so there's no need to paddle back! We can arrange to pick up the kayaks from the
Motueka end of the Park or from Totaranui. An extra charge is made for this service.
Normally you start paddling from Tata or Pohara beach. If the winds
are strong westerlies then, for multi day trips, we may be able to
start you at Totaranui.
Distances groups paddle in a day can vary greatly, so the following
are suggestions only.
1 Day:
For single day trips we recommend paddling around Tata Islands, Wainui Bay where there are nice secluded beaches
to picnic/sunbathe on.
For full day hire, you can paddle as far as Taupo Point (see Taupo Point Special page
about Taupo Point).
2 Days:
See at Taupo Point Over Night Special.
3 Days :
Paddle round Separation Point, camp first night at Waiharakeke, second night at Mosquito Bay (don't
be put off by the name, it's a lovely campsite off the main walking track so it is quieter).
Explore Tonga Island area. Pick up at Totaranui on third day.
4 Days Plus:
As for above 3 days plan, but you can have an extra day at Mosquito Bay or carry on southward. Pick up at Totaranui
or Marahau.
